Yesterday's post on the lessons we can learn from out pets made me think about how much pets add to our lives. Web
MD.com notes that owning pets can actually improve your health. Pets can provide valuable friendship and companionship, but pet owners also handle daily stress more effectively. Pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression and the website says that pets can even lower your blood pressure. A benefit that I see in owning a pet is also home security. Companion pets are used in hospitals for therapy and are beneficial for those advancing in age.

Losing a beloved pet is one of the most difficult times for many people. I heard a story one time about two adults talking about how sad it is that animal lives are shorter than human lives. There was a young boy nearby who had been listening to the adult conversation and piped in that he knew the reason. The adults, unaware that he was even really paying any attention to their discussion, kindly listened to his comforting explanation.
He simply explained that people are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice. He asked the adults if they agreed, and they did. The young boy continued his explanation that dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.
Our pet border collie, Dixie, adds so much joy to our lives. I just can't imagine life without her!!
What an adorable story! I often worry about what I will do without my pets too and always wish they could live for the rest of my life. I love that research shows having pets is actually good for people because I couldn't imagine life without pets, so it's great to know that they offer health benefits as well as companionship. When I hear people say they don't have pets because they aren't "animal people" I always think to myself, "If only they know how wondeful owning a pet actually is." In one of my earlier blogs, I talked about how my dachshund always seems to know when I need to be cheered up and what a great job she does of it. While I am not a gloomy person, I can definitely say that having her has kept me happier through the years and like you, I don't know what I would do without her.
ReplyDeleteThat is one of the most precious stories I have ever heard. How true that little boy is about the lifespan of people vs. our beloved pets! I also read an article by Billy Graham who answered the question, "Do pets go to heaven?" He replied that heaven holds all the things that are dear to us and whatever is needed for us to be eternally happy. Therefore, our pets will be in heaven with us. Very comforting to know!
ReplyDeletei love shte story you shared with us. Pets are precious creatures. They are just snother part of the famiy. I have two cats and a dog and they are all spoiled rotten. Sometimes I think my dog Sophie has it even better than some people do. She goes to her "grandma's" house every weekday during the school year for doggie daycare. My mom loves her as much as I do and so now every time I say sophie, are you ready to go to grandma's I don't knwo who get more excited, Sophie or my mom. Sophie, and both of my cats, really do have a wonderful life and I hope they are around for many years to come.
